Is there an Ornithologist in the comm? (Ventura College)
  laughinghyena

08:56pm 07/07/2010
I know that nobody has posted here in ages, but I'm really curious about the two hawks at Ventura College. See, I'm taking Summer classes, and I keep seeing them there. A female and male pair, perhaps?
I can't tell if they are harrier hawks or some other type of small hawk.
They both have very distinct clear sounds that they make. They also have white chests with light brown spots on the top, small beaks, brown faces, banded tail feathers, and are small in size.
I'm planning on taking my camera with me just in case. I was able to follow them from tree to tree by foot. They didn't like if I got too close on land and would go to the next tree to avoid me.

I've been going to VC for a very long time and this is the first time I've seen and heard hawks up close there. Mostly, you have scrub jays, rabbits, sparrows, crows, a lone gull or two and various song birds in the location.
Thanks if you can help me identify them!

I can't wait for summer to start, especially for all the summer festivals! Where do you all like to go - best summer fests in Ventura?

I'll start --
Last year I went to an Oktoberfest that was a blast and a luau in Newbury Park. Both were awesome/fun - so much I want to go to more. Suggestions?

Cancelled classes/schools, Malibu Fire

mood: worried
Any word of classes or schools closed on Monday in our area due to the recent Malibu fire?
I go to Ventura Collage and have at least three classes on Mondays and Wednesdays.
I'm conflicted in if I should stay home or go out due to the unhealthy and hazardous air quality.

Anyone in the area want to help me film a video for the Nintendo-Tribeca Film Festival today [in the Newbury Park area]? If you're male, that's great; if female, it works, too.

Art-o-Mat, a really cool idea!
  laughinghyena

01:46pm 15/09/2006
Knowing that Ventura is becoming or already is an art town, a recent article in the LA Times was about a group called ArtoMat.
It's in today's paper titled as 'Hey, can I bum an artwork off of you?' in the first Calender section.

I really think we should have one since we have the artwalks going on up here.
So far there are machines located in Los Angeles (The Museum of Contemporary Art), Oceanside (Clients & Profits), Sacramento (Crocker Art Museum), and San Francisco (RayKo Photo Center).

The link to the homepage is here: http://www.artomat.org/home.html
The thing is finding a good location for one in our city.

Photography and Thursday Troubadours
  kbnison

02:31am 08/07/2006
In the past few months, I've taken up digital photography. I thought it would be something fun to do. So far I've taken photos at the mission, downtown Main St., the promenade at the beach, the harbor, and in my neighborhood.

What places would you suggest for taking pictures?

Also, has anyone else checked out the Thursday Troubadours thing we're having this July? I drove past and saw a few bands here and there but not many people. These are local musicians so next week I'll get out and walk, check them out. I'm a sucker for local events :)

Looking for a place to live/roommates
  bayareajenn

08:33pm 20/06/2006
Hi. My name is Jennifer. I'm 34yo. I don't smoke. I'm looking for a room to rent from July or August of this year through May of 2008. I currently live in San Jose, but I'll be attending Moorpark's Exotic Animal Training and Management program, and so I need a room for the duration. I'd prefer a furnished room, but I can do unfurnished. I don't smoke and would prefer the same. I won't be bringing my pets, but I don't care if you have any. For one class in one semester, I'll need to keep and train a rat, though. I'm reasonably clean, but not a neat-freak. I won't leave messes for my roommates to clean up. I have my own car. I'd prefer to live in Moorpark, but Camarillo, Thousand Oaks, and Simi Valley are all do-able. I'm quiet, not a party person, but I'm not antisocial, either. I like to play games and I like to cook. I'd like a place that has laundry available on-site (not coin-op), a dishwasher, an internet connection, kitchen privileges, and parking. I'd prefer my own room, but I don't mind sharing a bathroom. I'm looking for a place for between $450 and $550 a month, including utilities. I've been checking craigslist (Ventura County and Los Angeles), The Acorn, roommates.com, and The Kitty Letter. I've had a few nibbles, but I haven't reeled anything in yet.

Please pass the word to anyone you know who is trying to find a roommate.

  Hey all!
I just wanted to say I'm glad everyone seems to be surviving the fire, and that our fire and police crews in this town are awesome. You can check out the pics people have been posting at the Star here: http://vcstar.buzznet.com/cat/

PS. Anyone else amused that CNN got into a fender bender with a fire truck and then couldn't understand why the police chewed their butts about it?

***PLEASE READ*** donating clothing for babies/children
  mama4lilc

09:50pm 03/09/2005
I may find somewhere else to send donations, but this is what I'm thinking as of right now...

http://www.braf.org/page25288.cfm

It says they need clothing.

Leave a comment if you're interested in donating money ($5 will get a few outfits at the consignment store I'm going to) or clothing. I'll collect as much as I can and then send it all at once. If you have some old clothes that your baby has outgrown, that's perfect. That's what I have right now...TONS of clothes Dylan has outgrown. And 2 huge trash bags FULL of blankets! If you want to add a dollar or two for shipping, that'd help too.
